Memories of Grandpa

An Irish Blessing

May the road rise with you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face.
May the rains fall soft upon your fields,
And, until we meet again,
May God keep you in the hollow of his hand.
And may you be in heaven a half hour before,
Before the devil knows you’re dead.

In Loving Memory of Our Dad and Grandpa
Thomas Patrick Murphy

Our dad had a great sense of humor
And a huge love of family and he loved us.
He was generous and loyal.
He had compassion for others and he loved us.
Dad never tried to impress others,
Never cared about acquiring wealth and he loved us.
He lived a simple life,
He had an incredible work ethic,
He was a dreamer and he loved us.
Dad loved God, he loved children,
He loved animals, and he loved us.
He enjoyed travel,
He loved to dance and he loved us.
Dad was a friend to many and always kind to strangers,
And he loved us.
Dad, Grandpa, Friend…
Was loved and respected by many and

WE LOVED HIM EVER SO MUCH.

Some personal memories of my Goody Grandpa…

Going on an overnight trip with Grandpa and Dottie to a beach house.
Sitting on Grandpa’s lap while he pretended to be Santa Claus.
Saying “Grandpa for a dollar”.
Getting to choose treats off of Grandpa’s catering truck.
Grandpa always answering “About 65%” whenever you asked him how he was.
Grandpa always paying whenever we went out to eat.
As a child always imagining that my cute very Irish looking, and short, grandpa was really a leprechaun…I don’t think I’ve ever even told anyone about this!
Grandpa reminiscing about his Murph Guitars and the War.
Grandpa giving us his car and many other generous things he did for our family.
Grandpa sending us money for Fiona’s diapers. What a blessing that was for us!
Grandpa filling up the gas tank of the car he gave us before I left with it.
Staying with Grandpa for a weekend when he gave us his car. I enjoyed this time so much and didn’t realize at the time how much those last memories of him would mean to me. Thanks God for that opportunity.
Seeing Grandpa on our way back to Idaho from Mexico.
Grandpa getting to meet Fiona for the first time and giving her, her first dollar.
Grandpa always wearing his Murph guitar T-shirts or sweatshirts.
A conversation I had with Grandpa while staying with him. We were talking about the car he was giving us and he said he knew it wasn’t a great fancy car or anything but that it ran well and that was all that mattered. He told me how he never cared about being rich but that he felt like he lived a very rich life. He said that family was really what was important and that he had a good family. He admitted having made mistakes in life but really seemed happy with the way things turned out. The conversation I had with him in the car that day while on our way to Wal Mart really made an impression on me and I still think of it often. Grandpa was really a man who enjoyed life no matter what it brought him and I admire that very much. That is not a quality many people possess these days.
When Elias asked Grandpa about how my dad, Terry, was when he was a child. He told him that Dad was a good kid, always helpful and thoughtful. While the other kids might run off to play Dad would stop to ask Grandpa if he needed any help around the house. Dad helped Grandpa in many ways until the day Grandpa died.
The two conversations I had with Grandpa before he passed. One the day before he went to the hospital and the other a few days before his death. I can still hear Grandpa’s sweet raspy voice. “Oh, I’m okay, about 50%”.

Well Grandpa you were always 100% in my book. We love you so very much and will miss you always. You were a great Grandpa and I will always cherish the memories I have of you. How lucky I was to have such a great Goody Grandpa.

What a beautiful tribute to a wonderful man that I had the privilege of knowing. I have tears running down my cheeks remembering he WAS such a generous man.
